Rebecca Harris MP welcomes Prime Minister Liz Truss to Office and supports her action to make sure people are not facing unaffordable energy bills and to secure our future energy supply.
As promised in her leadership campaign, the Prime Minister immediately began to deal with the energy crisis caused by Putin’s War. Today she announced emergency legislation to establish a new Energy Price Guarantee, which will ensure that the average British household pays no more than £2,500 per year for their energy bills for the next two years from October. This will save the average household at least £1,000 per year. The Energy Price Guarantee comes in addition to the announced £400 energy bills discount for all households and together they will bring costs close to where the energy price cap stands today.
Rebecca understands that not everyone will be eligible for the Energy Price Guarantee, such as the many constituents living in park homes or who use heating oil in Castle Point. Therefore, she is pleased that the Government will set up a discretionary fund for these individuals to make sure that no one is left behind this winter.
Businesses and other non-domestic energy users (including charities and public sector organisations like schools) will also be offered an equivalent guarantee for six months, and after those six months the Government will provide further support for vulnerable sectors, such as hospitality, including our local pubs. There will be a review in 3 months’ time to consider where this should be targeted to make sure those most in need get support.
Learning from the mistakes of the past, the Government is taking action to accelerate domestic energy supply, increase our energy resilience and achieve our ambition to make the UK an energy exporter by 2040. The Government will do this by ending the moratorium on shale extraction to get gas flowing as soon as six months' time, boosting renewables including wind and solar, launching Great British Nuclear later this month, and creating a pro-investor environment to get more domestic supply projects off the ground, faster. A review will also be held to fix the longstanding problems within our energy regulation, and the Government will bring forward fundamental reforms to make our energy market fit for the challenges Britain faces today.
Rebecca Harris MP commented:
“I would like to congratulate our New Prime Minister on her successful leadership campaign and look forward to supporting her throughout her premiership as the third female leader of the Conservative Party and third female Prime Minister.
“I know many people in Castle Point are worried about the rising cost of living and I am therefore very pleased that the Prime Minister has already offered valuable and much-needed support for people and businesses with their energy bills. The Government’s new Energy Price Guarantee will massively help the people of Castle Point, by saving the average household at least £1,000 per year.”
