Rebecca visited the Versus Arthritis stand at Conservative Party Conference to hear more about the work they do.
The word arthritis is used to describe pain, swelling and stiffness in a joint or joints and contrary to popular belief, arthritis isn’t a single condition, there are several different types. Around 10 million people in the UK are thought to have arthritis with over 10,000 people living with the condition in Castle Point. Whilst some forms of arthritis are more common in older people, it can affect people of all ages – even children and teenagers.
Versus Arthritis consists of volunteers, healthcare professionals and researchers and they do everything they can to push back against arthritis. Currently they are working to develop breakthrough treatments whilst simultaneously campaigning relentlessly for arthritis to be seen as a priority.
Their research is focused on accelerating the pace and precision of musculoskeletal research through trying to gain a better understanding of arthritis – its causes and why certain people are more affected. They want to turn their breakthroughs in the lab into real life interventions for those suffering quicker so the benefits to day-to-day life are felt sooner.
