Dame Rebecca Harris, Castle Point MP, has pledged to support the 8,323 unpaid carers living in Castle Point over the course of this Parliament.
Rebecca attended an event in Parliament and met with unpaid carers to hear about and better understand their experiences of caring, how carers can be better identified and recognised and the support they need.
Local MP Dame Rebecca said after the event:
“Unpaid carers across Castle Point are providing essential support to family members and friends every single day, often without any breaks or support for themselves. I believe it is so important that their efforts are properly recognised and at this event I heard more about the fantastic work these organisations are doing to help families like Carers Choice or Kool Carers in Castle Point which also has an amazing shop in Thundersley.
I am backing the call for more Government action and will be holding Labour Ministers to account to ensure they support our unpaid carers.”
The event was organised by Carers UK and supported by seven other Carers Week charities – Age UK, Carers Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Association, The ME Association, Oxfam GB, Rethink Mental Illness and The Lewy Body Society. Together these organisations are calling on the Government to develop a new National Carers Strategy to ensure that all carers get the support they need.
Carers Week, established by Carers UK 29 years ago, is an annual awareness campaign which takes place recognise the vital contribution made by the UK’s millions of carers. Carers UK and charity supporters Age UK, Carers Trust, The ME Association, MND Association, Oxfam GB, Rethink Mental Illness and The Lewy Body Society are inviting the public to join them in “Putting Carers on the Map” by supporting Carers Week 2024.
