Protecting our Borough from flooding

After devastating flooding in Castle Point, I made it my personal mission to ensure that all the different flood prevention agencies co-ordinate their improvement works and put in place further protections. I strongly welcomed the £20 million of flood defence work that followed this and in the Government’s investment of £75 million in new sea defences for Canvey to make sure the Island remains free from the risk of tidal flooding until at least 2070.

 Defending our Green Belt from unwanted development

I will continue to stand with residents against unwanted developments on our precious Green Belt and this Government has made protections for our Green Belt far stronger and more transparent. Our Green Belt is precious and our infrastructure can’t take it, which is why I have been urging Castle Point Borough Council to finalise a local plan to end speculative development applications in the area.

 Backing local business to create local jobs

Inflation has fallen and we have put our economy on the right track. For every day of this Conservative Government, 800 people have gained a new job. We have lowered the tax burden for local businesses by extending the 75% reduction of business rates for retail, leisure and hospitality and cut National Insurance for the self-employed and employees. Only the Conservatives have a sound economic plan for our country.

 Tackling anti-social behaviour and cracking down on crime

Essex Police now has a record number of officers and I am working with them to address residents’ concerns around anti-social behaviour so that people can be reassured they are safe in our community. Crime fell by 9.7% in 2023 across Castle Point and I have seen the town teams in action who are making a real difference.

 Supporting our pensioners

I supported the introduction of the Triple Lock and I’m glad we continue to support older people. I am a keen advocate and regularly advertise for the uptake Pension Credit where you can gain free bus passes and prescriptions, rental or mortgage support and Cold Weather Payments. Please check now as you may be eligible for £3,900 of additional help. I will continue to champion greater support for the retired people in our Borough.

 Increasing opportunities for local young people

I have worked hard to support local schools and colleges and standards have risen significantly since 2010. I will continue my push to secure more good quality education and training in Castle Point through record Government funding and support. This will ensure our young people have bright prospects ahead in the modern jobs market.
